02 Sep Judy’s story: When health insurance supported my family
Our Mortgage and Insurance Adviser Judy Steiner sits down to share the personal journey she and her husband Dan are going through, and how health insurance is the vital support that is helping them through their challenges. Hear from Judy herself in the video, or dive into their story below.
After many years in the insurance industry, Judy never expected to become one of her own client stories. But sometimes life has a way of showing you exactly why the products you recommend matter so much.
When everything changed
A year ago, Judy’s husband Dan received a diagnosis that rocked their world. Rectal cancer. The shock was huge, but thanks to their private health insurance, Judy’s immediate reaction was clear, “we needed to put in a claim right away.”
Within days of diagnosis, Dan was receiving treatment through the private medical system. The speed and quality of care was incredible. Dan began on ten cycles of treatment, and he coped with it remarkably well. Judy was really happy with how well the medical team looked after him, and while there were some side effects, they were manageable.
The journey continues
After finishing the first treatment cycles, they took a three-month break which included a trip overseas. This had been planned since before Dan was diagnosed, so to be able to still go away was a welcome relief and just what they needed. While the cancer is still there (it has actually spread), Dan has started a new series of treatments with non-pharmaceutical drugs.
The peace of mind the Health Insurance has given them has been invaluable. Some of the reasons that come to Judy’s mind are:
- Not having to sit on waiting lists to be seen or get treatment in the public system.
- Not having to worry about finding funds to pay for this treatment. Although they could of paid for some of it, their funds wouldn’t have lasted forever.
- Dan has been able to maintain his quality of life throughout this challenging time.
Judy genuinely believes that without access to private medical support, we may not have him with us today. She says that paying the insurance premiums have been their best investment.
Making medical insurance accessible
Judy often hears people say health insurance is too expensive. She disagrees.
“Yes, it can be expensive – but only if you don’t work with an adviser who helps you find a price point that works for your situation.”
The key is finding the right balance of coverage and affordability that fits your circumstances.
